What is a Heat Interface Unit?

A heat interface unit is a modular unit installed separately in each apartment of centrally heated buildings, and it prepares domestic hot water using the principle of instantaneous heating through a soldered plate heat exchanger. It also controls the apartment’s heating.

The heat interface unit acts as an interface between the central heating system and individual apartments, making it the energy substation for each unit. Heat interface units do not generate energy; instead, they control the energy coming from the central heating system within the apartment.

Why QSUB Heat Interface Unit?

With QSUB T-Series and soon-to-be-released QSUB-e IoT heat interface unit, you can have the most suitable control systems for your comfort while minimizing energy consumption and making your heating expenses sustainable.

QSUB heat interface unit offer unlimited functional options compatible with all types of apartment heating:

  • Use QMET Ultrameter+ to measure your energy consumption and collect consumption data in information centers via m-bus.
  • Control your apartment heating and domestic hot water with Smart Control using your phone.
  • Keep your domestic hot water ready at all times, even after long breaks, with the KSS Re-circulation Kit.
  • Use QSUB-T Series indirect heat stations to separate your apartment’s circulation line, completely individualizing the central system.

What are the advantages of QSUB Heat Interface Unit?

When designing the mechanical system of a newly constructed building, the following factors play an important role:

  • Reducing investment costs
  • Minimizing future operating expenses
  • Reducing maintenance costs to a minimum
  • Improving heating quality
  • Enhancing the supply of domestic hot water
  • Increasing control options for supplying the apartment with domestic hot water and heating energy.

The energy source can be a liquid or gas-fueled boiler or hot water from a central energy production plant (waste heat, geothermal, district heating, cogeneration, etc.). Balancing the system is crucial to meet maximum demand, and this can be achieved by connecting an accumulation tank between the system and the energy center.

Heat interface units installed at the apartment entrances become the energy center for each apartment. They are supplied with a circulation pump that can be adjusted based on the pressure difference in the apartments. Additionally, each station can be fed with the appropriate energy (central hot water) using zone valves installed on the heating line. The temperature control of individual sections (rooms) is achieved through thermostatic valves and collector groups.

Heat stations are equipped with plate heat exchangers capable of providing sufficient hot water production at the required flow rate, and priority is given to hot water production using either thermostatic or electronic control systems.

Cold water and heat meters mounted on heat interface unit determine the amount of cold water used and the energy consumed by each apartment, and their values are considered in cost distributions.

The allocated space for heat interface unit in the apartments is smaller than that for individual energy-producing devices such as boilers. Additionally, since heat stations do not require special exhaust pipes, the problem of chimney cleaning is eliminated.

The temperature control of each apartment’s individual sections is easily achieved.

The operation times of boilers can be optimized with an accumulation tank, and solar collectors and heat pumps can be added to support the system.

In these systems, the return temperatures of heating water can be kept at 50°C or lower, making it easy to use condensing boilers.

No additional measures are needed for Legionella disease prevention during hot water production.

The hot water requirement determined based on the size of the apartment and the number of occupants is met without the need for waiting time using plate heat exchangers.

Substation Dimensioning

Based on our more than 15 years industrial experiences at QMET, we also offer a “tailor-made” design service for our customers alongside our “T Series” portfolio. The variability of mechanical installations in many structures has given rise to the need for “Special Edition” solutions. As QSUB, we develop project-specific designs with our professional design team to meet the needs of all mechanical installations.”
